Abstract

In this teaching unit, we discuss the effect of German unification and EU enlargement on the European integration process from a political economy perspective. The EU’s eastwards enlargement was one of the main priorities of German foreign policy in the 1990s. It was focused politically on support the democratic transformation of the former Eastern Bloc and economically on the expansion of the EU internal market eastwards.  As a result, the European Union has changed substantially. Politically the Treaties of Amsterdam and Nice have strengthened the EU institutions against the nation-state veto powers. Economically, the integration of Eastern European countries has not only created new markets, but also enabled access to cheap labor reserves, both through investments in Eastern Europe as well as by labor migration westwards. In this seminar, we discuss the benefits and problems of the regional orientation of Europe. Thus, for example, we will discuss the influence of the EU enlargement on the reduction of national social standards and on the development of a social Europe.
